A REMIX | White Hinterland

STRAIGHT OUTTA BROOKLYN: Barsuk Records put up a tweet about Brooklyn-based mixologist Alan Wilkis creating a remix of Phantogram’s “Mouthful of Diamonds”. Hear that track here at The Music Mix. Okay, I’m not a big fan of it. In part, because the jumpy beat and the added vocal loop turn a melancholic track into a number I could see folks rollerskating to. The track has a Madonna-meets-Plastilina Mosh vibe — which is to say it’s funk and 80s throwback. It’s skillfully done, but just not my style. But that doesn’t mean Wilkis doesn’t have the right stuff. He does. Check out his remix of White Hinterland’s “No Logic”. He adds subtle drumming, guitar and a flute/synth ditty around Casey Dienel’s soothing voice. Everyone who reads this blog knows my general feelings about remixes: No one remixes a bad song. So, inevitably, a DJ takes a song that’s already good and messes it up. In this case, I’m wrong. This remix is better than the original song. – Art and words by David D. Robbins Jr.
