Jenny Gillespie‘s pretty “Creatures of our Make”, the first single off her upcoming April 10th release “Belita”, is a charming blend of folk and lush chamber pop. It’s a dreamy cut with harmonized vocals, Amidon’s voice trailing slightly behind Gillespie’s in a ghostly following. This is a sophisticated pairing, the duo’s voices complementing each other well. It’s a song about being carried away by a vision of love: “Couldn’t find you last night / Wandered without my flashlight / Like a smashed firefly / Thought I was resistant too, things I thought I’d never do / Slip into madness for those eyes.” This collaboration reminded me of the feel Anais Mitchell and Justin Vernon found on “Hadestown”. Gillespie’s album will feature contributions from Sam Amidon, Jim White, guitar great Marc Ribot (Chocolate Genius and Tom Waits), and instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily (Jolie Holland, Bonnie Prince Billy). “Belita” will be the first release off Narooma Records.
