CROSSOVER COOL | Solange

DIRTY PROJECTORS REVISITED: Beyonce’s sister, Solange Knowles, covers the Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness Is the Move” from their latest album, “Bitte Orca.” This overly syrupy track has been my least favorite from the DP album — but Knowles made me revisit it. Knowles replaces the vocals of the gorgeous Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian with her own multi-layered tracks. But what’s really cool? If you listen closely, you’ll hear Knowles sampling the Erykah Badu “Bag Lady” guitar lick, which Badu (and Dr. Dre) first sampled from Soul Mann & The Brothers’ “Bumpy’s Lament”. Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. I know some folks will think the much-used sample is just that, too much. But I think Knowles makes her own fire-hot, sexy R&B-tinged number out of this DP single. People will naturally want to compare the two, arguing one or the other is better. But just enjoy both and listen for yourself.
