IL ABANICO | Crossing Colors EP
Colombia’s il abanico play an innovative style of pop-rock with a frenetic sense of rhythm. On their newest EP, “Crossing Colors”, you’ll hear hints of Stereolab’s fierceness of pace, and ability to combine 1950s/60s easy-listening swoon, jazzy vocal elements, and instrumentation with a keen ear for what’s vintage. “Songs of Love” isn’t too far removed from Stereolab’s “Ping Pong” (“Mars Audiac Quintet” 1994) with its scatter-shot transitions and immaculate song structures. The lyrics are sensual, rising into charmed and pretty verses about being close to another person, “I’ve been sleeping for awhile / But you keep singing songs of love … / I just want to sleep beside you all night long.” Their music comes at you in bursts, both messy and articulate. Il Abanico is vocalist Juliana Ronderos and guitarist Nicolas Losada with help from guitarist Miguel Arroyo, drummer Ale Giuliani, and bassist Sayuri Shimada.
