Fol Chen’s Julian Wass has a solo debut, “Crystals”, out now that you can stream or download at his bandcamp page. The record turns back the clock, mixing 1980s appreciation for 8-bit graphics, analog sounds, and computerized blips circa Atari and Texas Instruments. But there’s also a modernity to it all, in its creation of mysterious and drifting musical diversions. The six tracks are fun, experimental, moody, melodic, and foremost intriguing.
