California’s Tashaki Miyaki posted a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Heartbeat” on soundcloud. This scuzzed-out, garage Jesus and Mary Chain-like duo aren’t new to the old-school sounds of do-wop or even Motown soul, because just a couple of months ago they posted a version of Sam Cooke’s “Nothing Can Change This Love” on bandcamp. But these aren’t your standard standards — rather they keep the melodies and sways, but add scorching guitar, layers of reverb while keeping a very real lo-fi quality. It’s a style that’s sugar and spice and everything nice, with a little dirty grime to boot. “Heartbeat” comes with any purchase of Tashaki Miyaki’s newest EP, which you can get via Sounds of Sweet Nothing boutique label.
