AIR | Le Voyage Dans La Lune

Being a massive film buff and collector, this Air conceptual album, “Le Voyage Dan La Lune”, really intrigued me when I first heard about it. But there was nothing yet to hear, until today. Air and Beach House singer Victoria Legrand teamed up for a song called “Seven Stars”. Air originally were commissioned to write a piece of music for a restored color print of Georges Méliès 1902 silent film “Journey to the Moon”. They must have enjoyed creating the work, because they decided to extend the soundtrack into a fully-fledged record. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Méliès, he’s one of film’s earliest innovators, and discovered ways of presenting what we now might term as cinematic magic effects like time-lapse. You have to imagine being back in the late 17th century, and seeing what amounts to images of real people, doing things that seemed magnificent through Méliès’ brilliant manipulation of the art. You can hear this combo of Air and Beach House at NME.com. The song is a beautiful melding of two subtly atmospheric talents. It’s been awhile now since Air first broke onto the scene with “Moon Safari” in 1998, followed by the soundtrack to “The Virgin Suicides”, and leading all the way to 2009’s “Love 2”. “Le Voyage Dans La Lune” is expected to be released on February 7, 2012, and can be pre-ordered now at ITunes. The band’s website suggests that the digital and hard-copy CD/DVD Limited Edition version will include the 16-minute film with the new soundtrack.  Note: Much of Méliès’ film work is available online through the public domain, but the Flickr Alley distribution company has a wonderful set to purchase, which you can read about here. — David D.
