It’s difficult to tell when exactly Brice Woodall’s four tracks that comprise “Some Odd Years” were written and recorded. Perhaps sometime in the last couple of months. But the Chicagoan is officially releasing this EP on January 17th. The promotion for the records says the songs were recorded using a 1994 Yamaha cassette 4-track and then put into a computer to edit and add musical textures. Whatever the case may be, it’s a unique and layered DIY listening experience, that should impress you. The second track, the pulsating “Even the Mice & Snakes”, is masterful. Softly swirling guitar textures combine with a throbbing warped noise, both coating his distorted falsetto in a warm, steadily building rhythm. This is a track good enough to mark a memorable start to the new year. And if you want to watch a show, catch Brice and his band at Chicago’s Ace Bar on Friday, January 20th.
