Shelf Nunny sent me a link to a new track, “Taboo”, posted on his soundcloud page. He created it with friend and vocalist Kaili Smith, who makes genre-bending music in her own right. (Check out her songs, “Don’t Trust the Stars” and the jazzy, multiform stunner “Empty Room” at soundcloud.) You might remember hearing the name Shelf Nunny on this blog in a post about a Tree song called “People”. Just to be clear, Shelf Nunny is not Tree — he’s just another talented musician out of Santa Cruz, who happened to help with the track. Shelf Nunny’s song “Taboo” is seductive, with elaborate stuttered beats, a sweet bass, and Smith’s mahogany-rich soulful R&B vocals: “Don’t know why it’s so wrong / To say taboo all day long / Why’s it always gotta be, a devil sitting next to me? … / Why can’t they just let me be? / Who decides what thou shalt not? / I do care, I just forgot.” The rhythm is really unique, even taking a break to diverge into video-game sounds, and chimes. You can follow Shelf Nunny at his soundcloud page or at facebook. Note: All lyrics are unofficial. — David D. Robbins Jr.
