It just goes to show you, even bands like Saint Etienne love to make mixtapes. In celebration of their new 13-track album, “Words and Music by Saint Etienne”, and a new single “I’ve Got Your Music”, Saint Etienne posted a new mixtape titled “Lazy Hazy Crazy Days Of Summer”. It features an hour’s worth of music that showcases some Saint Etienne influences, along with some surprise twists and turns. Basically, it’s a wonderful mixtape. There’s the floating wonder of Birgit Lystander’s “You Call This A Merry Go Round” and the slow psychedelics of The Smoke’s canine-obsessive “Self Analysis”. The mixtape begins with the short but sweet cooing of Christina Aguilera’s “Morning Dessert”. (Hey, don’t be a music snob. It’s a pretty little intro that mixes sexual and culinary insatiability. Listen, and you’ll see what I mean.) There’s also some other familiar names, Janelle Monae and the late Robin Gibb. And if you’re really into making seamless listening pleasure for a friend or family, here’s the latest mixtape I made for my mother on Mother’s Day — full of lesser-heard soul songs culled from the crates with love.
