Fiona Apple posted another track, “Werewolf”, for streaming. This is the second single (following “Every Single Night”) posted from off the upcoming 10-song LP “The Idler Wheel …” Apple explained to New York Times writer Jon Pareles how she used found sounds (the screaming of children playing with balloons) for an added texture to the piano-based melody. It’s obvious to anyone who listens to Apple that she has a wonderful voice, plays an elegant piano, creates unique arrangements, and sings with a passion. But her real gift is songwriting that perfectly melds esoteric poetics and colloquialism. Peculiar enough to be endlessly interesting, universal enough to be felt by many kinds of listeners. That’s a difficult thing to do, let alone with consistency. — David D. Robbins Jr.
