The sullen opening track, “Cherokee”, from Cat Power’s newest upcoming release, “Sun”, was played at NPR. It’s also found it’s way to YouTube. “Cherokee” follows the official June 18th release of the song, “Ruin”. If these tracks say anything about the rest of the record, then fans are in for a change of pace and style. Listen to earthy and painful “Cherokee” with its drum machine, multi-instrumental arrangement, and driving rhythm: “I never knew love like this / The sun, sea, you and I / I never knew pain / I never knew shame / Now I know why / Bury me, marry me to the sky / If I die before my time, bury me upside-down / Cherokee kiss me …” It’s a real stunner, as the track speeds into a frenetic pace at the 1:28 mark, soaring into a blend of synth, keyboard and percussion.
