Neo-soul wonder Frank Ocean has a new racy video for his track, “Pyramids”, directed by Nabil. The song is off his “Nostalgia, Ultra” follow-up, “Channel ORANGE”. “Pyramids” is just another one of the examples of why Ocean’s music is much better than your standard slow-jam R&B fair. In fact, I’d argue Ocean might not be getting as much credit as he deserves, being so hyped and all. It’s not just his honesty and artistry, but the little touches, like hitting the vocal distortion at the right point, inventive lyricism, and that faint horn in the background — an elegant touch to a song that’s both sensual and danceable. Sure, this track hits on verses about taking a bath, drinking champagne, and touching your lover “in places”. But he also mixes those more common lyrics with beautifully delivered forays into something altogether more idiosyncratic: “Pimping in my convos / Bubbles in my champagne / Let it be some jazz playing / Top floor motel suite, twisting my cigars / Floor model TV with the VCR / Got rubies in my damn chain / Whip ain’t got no gas tank / But it still got woodgrain.” Read a Their Bated Breath archived review of “Nostalgia/Ultra” here. — David D.
