Tennis posted a cover of Television’s waltzing “Guiding Light” from off the famed band’s seminal 1977 new-wave diamond, “Marquee Moon”. It’s a wonderful re-imaging. Of course, listeners’ immediate response is to do a compare and contrast to determine which version sounds better. I don’t like to think that way. Obviously, the latter can’t exist without the original creation, but I will say this: I was really impressed with how beautiful the song sounds with a female lead vocal. And like most good covers that stay close to the original, the song feels revitalized. Tennis keeps the rolling rhythm, the melody, and does justice to the final guitar outro. The keyboards are prettily upbeat: “Do I, do I? / Belong to the night? / Only, only, only tonight / All the ladies, stay inside / Time may freeze / A world could cry / All these nights running loud / I hear the whispers, and I hear the shouts.” Watch Tennis on Friday in Urbana, Ill. at Pygmalion Music Festival; October 1st in Philadelphia, Pa. at Union Transfer; and October 2nd in Hoboken, N.J. at Maxwell’s.
