Chicago’s soft but mighty veterans The Sea and Cake have a video for the lead track, “On and On”, from off their latest record, “Runner” (2012), out via Thrill Jockey. The video and sand animation was created by Naomi Nagata. Sea and the Cake is one of those bands that manages to sound like itself time and again without losing any freshness or suffering a lack of creativity. The same could be said for “On and On”, a song that immediately is recognized as Sam Prekop and the boys, but still finds the youthful drive through surging guitar and steady rhythm. There are a number of burgeoning bands out there that should take note. Music isn’t always about being distant and trying to turn everything on its head. Sometimes it’s as simple as being yourself and finding that free-flowing sound that becomes the band. The Sea and Cake always sound modern and yet so many of their tracks hold a whiff of nostalgia, carrying a lightness of breath and a sense of fragility that beckons. — David D. Robbins Jr.
