Christen Cappello (aka Club Girls) has a new video for her song, “I Can Do A Lot”. It’s a stellar, short but sweet, track. The beauty of the internet these days is that you can literally thumb your way through sites like vimeo, YouTube, soundcloud and bandcamp and run into unknown artists who create better and more interesting music than you’ll hear on your radio on the way to work, or the Grammys for that matter. (Even the video finds a way to be stylish in a low-budget way: It begins with a tongue-in-cheek splash of glitter, moves into reverse movements, colored frames, dancing in the park, coy close-ups, flashes of cityscape, and a spelling of Cappello’s moniker in the dirt.) “I Can Do A Lot” is melodically pretty, the lyrics cheekily assertive, confident, and refreshingly real: “We just want to hang out.” Ultimately, it’s a fun, imaginative track. (Sorta reminds me of the feeling I get listening to Imani Coppola’s 1997 record, “Chupacabra”.) Capello’s arrangement is slick too, with a harmonized lead vocal, odd gurgles, distance drums, overlaid backing vocals — even mixing in what I swear sounds like a cough (:54 mark). Seriously. How badass is that? Note: All lyrics quoted are unofficial. Images are screen captures from the video. — David D. Robbins Jr.
