Phèdre’s 2012 self-titled LP just barely missed making the Their Bated Breath “Best Albums” list — but in truth it would have been if the list were a little longer. But they did have some tracks make the “Best Songs” list. Now the band has followed up that record with a new single called “Zenith”. It’s much more noisy and distorted than the songs they’ve previously released. But underneath the buzzsaw guitar and the whirlwind of clashing sounds is a creepy and steady vocal melody and a hyper-rhythm that builds into a full-on punk thrash out. I like this direction, which sheds prettiness and goes straight for the gut, with obsessive vocal mantras, pounding guitars, and drums that sound like someone banging a metal rain drain.
