I’ve been really enjoying this lazy-day track, “Palmreader”, from Polyvinyl artist Sonny & The Sunsets. It’s a song off the San Francisco band’s upcoming June 11th release “Antenna to the Afterworld”. The song begins innocuous enough, with a low strummed bass and guitar, and lightly sung vocals about seemingly throwaway subjects. But it builds into slick vocal harmonies, slight changes of pace, and a cool guitar solo that accents the warped sorta of off-key post-punk sound. The song’s focus turns toward thoughts of prediction, end times and persistence, “Every year they say the end is near / But we’re still here / We’re still here.” I’m a big fan of music that seems to create it’s own world, it’s own time, and ultimately it’s own sound. “Palmreader” follows behind a song, “Green Blood”, that the band released for streaming on NPR back in April. — David D.
