Violin maestro Hannah Epperson, who also moonlights with friend Miss Emily Brown of Morlove, has a new single out. It’s called “Shadowless”, produced by Ajay Bhattacharyya from duo Data Romance (under the moniker Stint). I like this musical departure for Epperson. Her last EP “Home Batch”, while pretty, was more traditional and seemed to stick close to styles that are in her familiarity range, like neo-folk and orchestral. But “Shadowless” drifts into a more modern approach, like fellow-fiddlers Andrew Bird and Emily Wells, who’ve also found new avenues for a classic instrument. The song mixes her elegantly stirring strings, a pizzicato intro, heavy electronic beats, pinging percussive rhythms, and what sounds like a layer of her distorted/warped samples (or synth violin) atop her own playing. “Shadowless” also gives her a chance to spread her vocal wings into more soulful territory, which is good for everyone. In a way, what we have here is elegant lounge, that fans of a group like Everything But the Girl could get into. You can follow Epperson at facebook and myspace.
