Argentinian experimental musician Juana Molina posted a new song, “Eras”, for streaming. It’s the first single off her upcoming record, scheduled for release on August 21. Molina has always been a musician who does things her own eclectic way. Never modish. So, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that her new song is another hybrid of styles and influences. Fans will recognize the familiar vocally harmonic stylings of Molina, who seems to enjoy overlapping verses, and rapidly changing a song’s pace and structure. This bass rhythm gives “Eras” (perhaps a slight play on the Spanish-sounding word “eres”) a sinister build-up, like soundtrack for a Western film. But the lush vocal harmonies, catchy electronics, heavy percussion and wild musical transitions are as modern as ever. They blend, burst, and break away into hypnotic, mantra-like chants. — David D.
