Fifty Grand | Scary All Over

“8 months ago someone close to my heart died tragically and unexpectedly” …

Loss is often the strongest impetus for creativity. Pain and healing grate against each other and you hope some kind of clarity or wisdom ensues. That process of mining is where Fifty Grand’s four song EP, “Join You (The October Demos)”, comes from. You can hear and feel its expression in the thoughtful, transporting opener, “Scary All Over”, which feels intimate as a secret — quiet in its hushed vocals, like a long sigh. The song is just the first part of this eerie, heartfelt, mysterious journey through slow, aching, soft, muted soundscapes . The instrumentation is subtle and delicate — full of aquatic instrumental depths, echoes upon echoes, grasping at the intangible through cavernous keyboard, fluttery harp and enigmatic verses: “I want to know / Where is it you go / I want to see / If the words you’ve spoken exist to me.” The sounds are distilled and haunting, like the convulsive glitches in “No Punch”, which incorporates famous dialogue about chance, from the film “Casablanca” (“Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine”). There’s something almost frightening about “Culver”, which balances a tension of both fear and beauty in its languid, lushly dubbed-out percussion. This is one of my favorite EPs of 2013. It’s meant to be savored slowly and patiently. — David D. Robbins Jr.
