Troubadour and weathered-voiced veteran Mark Lanegan is set to release a record of covers called “Imitations”, out on September 17th via Vagrant Records. Two months ago, Lanegan posted a stream of his version of John Cale’s “I’m Not the Loving Kind”. Now, he’s followed that song with a dusky, moving and ultimately faithful take on the heartbreaking, boozy-ballad “Deepest Shade”, a cover of Greg Dulli’s Twilight Singers song: “My love I hope it’s true / This deeper shade of blue / My love I give to you.” “Imitations” features Lanegan covering songs from artists as varied as Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Bobby Darin and Andy Williams.
