Hard to resist a Portishead cover of “Glory Box” that sounds as if it were sung by Beyoncé. Well, covers are often a very personal thing, especially in my case, considering the inimitable Beth Gibbons and crew are one of my all-time favorites. But that’s where Maxine Ashley does it right. She doesn’t try to be Gibbons. Ashley keeps the basic structure of the song, and makes it her own, even taking a little risk and breaking down one of Portishead fans’ most personal parts of the song, the belted-out lyrics, “this is the beginning of forever.” Count me a fan of this bad boy, straight from the Bronx. It’s beautiful. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of style Ashley develops on her own. This combination of R&B-meets-Trip-Hop kinda reminds me of an older record released back in 2004, called Billy Miles. Look it up. God, she was good. Try this Miles cut, “Love Me”, to get you going. That style could be all yours, Maxine. You can follow Maxine Ashley at facebook and twitter. — David D. Robbins Jr.
