Lily and Madeleine | Devil We Know
There’s something to be said about the plainness of the name Lily & Madeleine. It hints at simplicity and a lack of gimmickry. The young duo have a new, self-titled record coming out October 29th via Asthmatic Kitty, and you can stream one track, “Devil We Know”, posted at their bandcamp page. I searched around for other songs they’ve sung previous to this record, and admittedly the style can get a little wearing in large doses: 60s throwback, two harmonized voices with accompanying piano or solemnly strummed guitar. But it’s difficult to say the songs aren’t at least pretty sounding. Plus, there’s no telling yet how much the two singers have grown and branched out. However, when I first heard “Devil We Know” (without knowing who exactly was singing it), I’d have sworn it was a song by Sharon Van Etten. The single is gorgeous, and better than all the older Lili & Madeleine tracks I heard via YouTube. Maybe it’s an indication of the direction of the album, which would be something well worth anticipating. For the record, one of those older songs is a cover of “Dimming of the Day”, a song originally sung by Linda and Richard Thompson, which shows that these ladies have broad tastes and an interest in the music that came before them. — David D.
