When I first received a link to this track in my e-mail and started listening to it, I seriously thought I was hearing two tracks at once. I thought I had left a second tab open in my browser and bandcamp was playing simultaneously with soundcloud. However, I pressed pause on Morgan Delt’s psychedelic gem, and everything in my Bose headphones went silent. What the hell, right? Well, I started playing it again, and sure enough, there’s just a lot of textures and layers to this numbingly gorgeous track. The California native is piling in everything and the kitchen sink, as the cliché goes, and it really works. There’s the playful and ambling opening bass rhythm, the garage-psych guitar — all coming together like something between Kurt Vile, Ariel Pink and West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Kaleidoscopic structures expand and contract with a pretty high-falsetto lead, doo-wop backing vocals, and loads of pop beauty. It’s addictive and stunning. (I’ve been going back into the track and looping the part where he sings, “way back inside your eyes …”, just so I can hear it over and over again.) I can’t wait to hear what’s coming out on his self-titled January 28th release via the Trouble In Mind label. Follow Morgan Delt at facebook. — David D. Robbins Jr.
