Los Angeles’ singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko is streaming a seductive new soulful single, “My Afternoon Dream”. Aiko is scheduled to release her debut record, the cleverly-titled “Souled Out”, via Def Jam in May. This love song is so polished, with its quiet island percussion, nimble piano, reverberating bass, and stylish R&B vocal stylings that I could pass over one of my pet peeves, which is a modicum of clichéd lyrical imagery. But then again, that’s slight, and most of the best love songs are just like that. It’s what makes them so universal. The lyrical concept itself is pretty and elegant though (love as a blissful haze, like daydreaming): “My afternoon dream when / The world is speedin’ / I am still sleepin’ / In my blue dream …” And I’m a sucker for comely sexual subtext: “My mind is open so wide, / Since you came inside …” You can follow Aiko on twitter. She also created and edited a new video to accompany the track, and you can watch it at vimeo. — David D. Robbins Jr.
