When I first heard Peter Matthew Bauer’s lead single, “Latin American Ficciones”, from off his upcoming release, “Liberation!”, its cool, guitar-driven, slacker drive reminded me a little of The Clash or Tom Petty. And if there’s a tinge of The Walkmen, there should be, because he’s spent 13 years playing bass for the band, before breaking out on his own, just as singer Hamilton Leithuaser and instrumentalist Walter Martin have done this year. Besides the lyricism and slick guitar work, the most surprising thing may be Bauer’s made-for-prime time vocals. He’s summoned a raspy, punked-out thunder that’s fitting to the musical style. The record is out June 23 in the UK and on June 24 in the U.S. via Memphis Industries and Mexican Summer. Bauer posted the song for streaming last month, but now there’s a video to go with it, that’s just as direct as the music. The video was directed by Matthew Barrick.
