Popstrangers | Distress

I’ve only heard this one single off of New Zealand trio Popstrangers’ latest 10-song LP release, “Fortuna”, out via Carpark Records on May 27th. The song is called “Distress” and is the third single the band released off the new album, and it has piqued by curiosity enough to check out the rest of the record. “Distress” has a decidedly British sound (in was also recorded in London during a five-day stretch), with a kind of rakish, devil-may-care lead vocal delivery. At the 1:46 mark of the song, the style and feel of the track takes a definite turn toward The Smiths and Johnny Marr’s jangly guitar tradition. It’s really quite good. — David D. Robbins Jr.
