Jhené Aiko | Stay Ready

Los Angeles’ singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko gave us a taste of her release “Souled Out” back in March with the sexy “My Afternoon Dream”. She’s following that single up with an equally slick song called “Stay Ready” featuring a mid-song segment where she raps some Kendrick Lamar-penned lyrics. (“Come, come to me / Look at what you’ve done to me / You put a gun to me / Think you brought the sun to me …”) What’s even cooler is this electronic-soul track, which also begins with verses about dreams and universes, breaks down into a slower, dark tempo that sounds like a raw, echoed-out The Weeknd-styled beat: “If everything is dipped in gold / Then baby it will never grow old / Everything is sweet and sugar-coated / What a life / What a life that I’ve been given.” Follow Aiko at facebook— David D.
