Virginia-based Colombian singer Kali Uchis wears vintage on her pink angora sleeve, and you can hear it in a slinky sugary soul cut called “Lottery”, from off her upcoming release, “Por Vida”. Her vocals call to mind Amy Winehouse, but Uchis likely has as much in common with Mary Wells and The Supremes as say FKA Twigs, Erykah Badu or M.I.A. Her musical style borrows from the past, literally. “Lottery” incorporates an oft-used sample of “Oh, Honey”, a smooth 1978 soul classic from U.K. one-hit wonder Delegation. Uchis sings about trying to keep a flame lit: “If I told you I was yours / You’d probably label me a bore / Maybe I’m just tryin’ way to hard to keep you / You’re an angel, and I’m blessed / So, I’m tryin’ to do me best.” My favorite verse is this cool rhyme sung with a stylishly jazzy intonation: “And I know what best is tainted / It’s a shame now baby, ain’t it?” This new track comes on the heels of working with Snoop Dogg and sessions with Tyler the Creator last year, and finishing up her 2013 debut EP Drunken Babble.
