Feels like a slight change of direction for San Francisco’s Mikey Maramag, aka Blackbird Blackbird. Here’s a dark, new entrancing track called “Calypso”, with glittering electronic touches and a shadowy sense of foreboding. Not sure if Blackbird Blackbird has the Greek nymph of mythology in mind, but the song is mesmerizing in a way that would fit her famed story. – David D. Robbins Jr.

A LOOK AHEAD: Blackbird Blackbird unveiled “Erasers” today. It’s the first single from his sophomore follow-up to “Summer Hearts”. Blackbird Blackbird says the new record will be released sometime in 2011 and will be 10-12 songs and “more reminiscent of the sample-heavy, psychedelic and poppy songs of my days as Bye Bye Blackbird”. Until then, here’s the new single from one of the more prolific musicians around. – David D. Robbins Jr.
QUICK POST: Mikey S., aka Blackbird Blackbird, tried his hand at remixing the lead single, “Undertow”, off Warpaint’s latest record, “The Fool”. Check it out below. Note: Photography by Takayuki Okada from the band’s MySpace page. – David D. Robbins Jr.
THE SONGSMITH: Blackbird Blackbird might have the record for most blogged about artist on Their Bated Breath. The sheer volume of music coming from him keeps growing, and so much of it high quality. His latest single is called “Modern Disbelief”, melding some of the best of 80s and 90s nostalgia. The song begins like it’s going to be a chillwave cut before the lyrics kick in, and turn it into a hazy 80s track more akin to early Matt Johnson, circa “Burning Blue Soul”. It eventually turns all retro-beautiful with warped synth and a repeated chorus. There’s even some high falsetto vocals pushing the track into a soulful realm. It’s really a pretty song. Wait until you get to the end, when the cut turns back on itself in all its subtle warped glory. To listen to his latest tracks go to his tumblr page. – David D. Robbins Jr.
FUELED BY THE MUSES: It seems Mikey Sanders of Blackbird Blackbird can do no wrong. He’s pumping out songs at an amazing rate. Following his 17-track release “Summer Heart” (an album called one the best of 2010 by Their Bated Breath), and a number of singles released via his tumblr page, Blackbird Blackbird now has seven more tracks. They’re compiled in a free EP called “Rarities”, available at his bandcamp page. These songs are all light and atmospheric — sexy, airy, delicate and wistful as cotton candy. Really lovely stuff. One of the standout tracks is the last one, “Twin Flames”, created with the help of Rachel Levy of Kiss Kiss Fantastic. It’s carried by elegant warped sounds, undulating synth, light tapping percussion and a wash of wind. Note: Photo by Rachel Levy – David D. Robbins Jr.
