THE JOY OF NOISE | Sometimes Always

INDUSTRIAL ECHOES: Our friends at EardumsPop have hit on another diamond. Sometimes Always (perhaps a nominal nod to The Jesus and Mary Chain, and their song of the same name) is one-man show, Tyo, out of Jakarta, Indonesia. Think My Bloody Valentine amplified. Tyo’s fuzz-assaults sound like the sonic roar of a jet engine, or someone turning on a set of sheers and putting them right up next to your ear. So, you’re probably wondering, how the hell does that sound enjoyable? It does, trust me. Underneath the frequency modulation, distortion and pitch-bending bacchanalia on Tyo’s new EP, is a harmonious synthesizer and a real sense of creativity. The third track, “Ivory Tower”, finds Tyo taking listeners down a rabbit hole of reverbed claps, synth notes and white noise. It’s a cool re-working of the original track by Sharesprings. At times, part of the song sounds like the noise you get when a CD skips, and gets stuck. The legato synth bleeps work well against the rougher repetition of clanks and waves of electric vibrations. Tyo’s music may have a dark industrial sort of foundation, but it’s also passionate. You can download Sometimes Always’ EP for free here thanks to EardrumsPop.
