J. IRVIN DALLY | Buzzsessions

Every once in awhile you run into a musician whose music you can’t help but fall in love with. I just recently posted about J. Irvin Dally on Big Ugly Yellow Couch, but the website The Wild Honey Pie bring the goods too in their recent Buzzsessions. They’ve got four more videos of Jordan and his band, freezing their asses off, and playing beautifully — all different songs from the previous post. This time Dally sings one of my favorites, “Teething” (with the gorgeous lyric, “Please let me burn your books / Let me feed on your crooks“), the heartbreaking “Beating a Horse”, “Movin” and “Blue/Grey”. He’s simply blessed with that voice. But his songwriting makes me think of A.A. Bondy, Joe Henry, Joey Kneiser’s “The All Night Bedroom Revival”, and Uncles — with that very moody, introspective way of looking at one’s place in the world. Videos are directed by Austin Conroy, edited by Eric Weiner and filmed by Austin Conroy and Weiner. All but one of those tracks is also up for free download at the website. I wouldn’t post so much about Dally if he weren’t just that good. But don’t take my word for it. Watch the video below and listen to an MP3. Then visit The Wild Honey Pie or go to Dally’s bandcamp page. — David D. Robbins Jr.
