ELA ORLEANS | walkingman (Video)

Ela Orleans posted a new video for “walkingman”, a song off her new 16-track cassette collection of lo-fi recordings called “NEO PI-R”, out via Clan Destine Records. The song name nicely suits the track. “walkingman” sounds just as the title suggests: a thumping synth is a man ambling along, a couple of high-pitched and intermittent beeps are the gait in his step. The vocals riff on the day: “I’m walking alone / Weather’s okay / There is no sun / There is no one / There is no rain / There is no time.” And then the song continues in this drowsy fashion amid skipping glitches, the tinkling of glass, a white noise and buzz — the only constant a heartbeat bass. It’s only apropos there should be a verse mentioning a lack of time. Even though the bass beat pushes onward, keeping time — it paradoxically creates a sort of timeless, numbed, desensitization through its repetition. That is so cool. Stasis is the nature of repetition, whether it’s in regard to everyday life or music. This is a hypnotic gem. Ela’s music is always so unique and brilliantly surprising. So many tiny blossoming subtleties. — David D. Robbins Jr.
