NEW TRACK | Moby and Kelli Scarr

DELICATE DUO: Moby and Kelli Scarr collaborated together for NPR’s “Project Song”, where musicians are asked to create a track in two days, allowing the station to record anything involving the process. It’s a cool idea. But there’s a little backstory to this for me. Years ago, I heard a superb Boston band called “Moonraker”, that featured Scarr as it’s lead singer. Eventually, we sent some e-mails back and forth talking about music we liked, and on my end — how good her band sounded. She kindly sent me a live disc and kept me up to date with the band. What I remember is she was gracious and sincerely humbled by praise. We talked about doing an interview (for a now defunct website) at her SXSW show, but it never came to be because I never did make it to Austin, Texas. Moonraker eventually disbanded, and Scarr seemed to disappear a bit. However, she was working on some solo material and was on a TV show about artists trying to break into the music business. Now she’s created a track with Moby called “Gone to Sleep”, with accompanying videos showing how the two built the song. Apparently, they are the only artists who’ve participated in the project who have created a track in less than the allotted time. So, after making a song in one day, the two sat down to make multiple versions, and used the rest of their time to perform a ‘Tiny Desk Concert’ for NPR staffers. It’s a mesmerizing video, showing Scarr (sans microphone) wielding her mighty pipes. (Believe me, she doesn’t need one.) Below is “Gone to Sleep” courtesy of an NPR download.
