THE TEXTURE OF | How To Dress Well

How To Dress Well (aka Tom Krell) has been posting tunes to his blog for some time now. He amassed enough to make a couple of records, but officially, he doesn’t have a full LP yet. His music is lo-fi, cloudy, colored with the cool of R&B. His voice is stellar, and more often than not he passes somewhere between indie artist de jour Bon Iver, or D’Angelo — which is to say he sings a nice high falsetto. Admittedly, sometimes, I find myself a bit frustrated by the recording quality of his songs. I’d like to hear Krell’s voice as crystal clear as possible. But there’s something to be said for the muffled, ambiguity of his recordings. It creates mystery through all the layers and textures. Much like the artwork above (taken from his blog) his music alludes and suggests — without giving into the concrete. It’s a silhouetted figure standing at the brink of possibility. There’s something uniquely complex underneath that laid-back air. Listen to “Ready For the World” below, remixed by Twins. — David D. Robbins Jr.
